Brand-new rankings listing the richest municipality in each state reveal just that.

Stacker said it used the most recent Census Bureau American Community Survey Five-Year Data (as of August 2024) to calculate its rankings.

"The 'richest town' can look quite different from state to state, with some being far wealthier than others," Stacker said.

"Locations are ranked by median household income, with ties broken by the percentage of people annually earning more than $200,000," according to Stacker. "Any places with a population smaller than 1,000 people were omitted.

"Additionally, the Census Bureau's statistics do not show specific median incomes or earnings beyond $250,000, so those numbers are designated as $250,000+."

So now, drumroll please, Stacker says that the wealthiest place in the commonwealth is the Middlesex County city of Newton with a median household income of $176,373 (134.7 percent more than the US median income).

About 44 percent of households earn over $200,000.

The percentage of the population with health insurance is 98.7.

"The large city just outside of Boston is full of historic landmarks, with four historic districts and a historical commission," Stacker says. "It's also known as 'The Garden City,' with 19.6 percent open space."
